Healthcare professionals may be active in all areas of health care, up to and beyond medical, surgical, dental, maternity, pharmaceutical, psychiatric, health care or related work. Health professionals can also be health experts working for the general good of societies and a multitude of other personnel who have been educated to deliver some kind of health care work.

Health care providers are usually divided into health care occupations. Internally, within each subject area, students are often ranked by qualifications and subject area. "health-care professionals" means high-qualified personnel in occupations which normally involve substantial skills, which include studies at tertiary levels resulting in the award of a first or higher grade.

These categories include doctors, receptionists, dental surgeons, seminarians, x-ray technicians, certified doctors, chemists, physiotherapists, opticians, specialists and others. Health Associates, also known as "Health Professionals " in the International Standard Classification of Occupations, assist in the delivery of health care, therapeutic and referral schedules, which are typically developed by doctors, caregivers and other health care workers, and usually demand official skills to perform their work.

Depending on the country, the number of regulated occupations, the conditions for obtaining a licence and the type of penalties that may be applied in the event of non-compliance differ. Throughout the United States, under the state of Michigan law, a person is found to have committed a crime when he or she is found to be practising health care without a valid medical licence or registry.

Members of the health care community may also be detained if they are found to have practised beyond the borders that allow their licenses and inscription. Land legislation defines the field of activity for medical, care and a number of related health care occupations. The exercise of a health professional without authorisation which results in serious physical injuries is a second-degree offence[27] punishable by terms of imprisonment of up to 15 years.

Health care professions in the UK are governed by the state and the UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) safeguards the "title" of each of the professions it governs.
