It'?s the moneymakers: The world' s 10 largest healthcare companies by turnover
The McKesson Corp. is the world's leading healthcare organization by sales, followed by the UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health, according to Verdict Medical Devices. These are the major healthcare companies, calculated on sales in 2017: In 2017, McKesson recorded sales volume gains of 4.9 per cent over the previous year. In North America, sales are expected to grow due to higher prices, higher medication use, acquisition activity and stronger relations with pharma distributors.
The UnitedHealth Group generated sales of 9 per cent more than in the previous year. Its UnitedHealthcare and Optum business unit recorded sales increases of 13% and 11%, respectively. Sales at CVS Health increased by 4.1 per cent compared to the previous year. A rise was recorded due to the company's apothecary portfolio, the volume of prescriptions and the introduction of products for managing the benefits of pharmacies. The Pharma Sales Service division of AmerisourceBergen Corporation increased its sales by 4.3 per cent compared to the previous year.
Walgreens Boots Alliance and Express Scripts contribute 45 per cent of the company's sales. Sales of Cardinal Health rose by 7 per cent compared to the previous year. The Pharmaceuticals and Medicine divisions boosted their sales by 7 and 9 per cent, respectively. The administration of prescribable drugs generated 98.2 per cent of Express Scripts Holding's overall sales in 2017.
Pharmaceutical charity fund managers accounted for 95.2 per cent of overall turnover. The 5.8 per cent rise in sales over the previous year was due to sales increases in all seg-ments. Income from trading and special operations increased by 5.3 per cent and income from governments by 6.2 per cent. Sales at Kaiser Permanente were 12.5 per cent up on 2016.
Aetna' s 2017 sales fell 4 per cent from 63.1 billion US dollars in 2016. This decline is due to lower premium income, the temporarily suspended healthcare plan premium and the $1.45 billion divestiture of the group business. As a result of lower sales in Humana's retail business, total sales in 2017 were down 1 per cent on the previous year.
Overall premium and service income also fell by 1 per cent year-on-year to USD 53.36 billion. For the latest Becker's Hospital Review commercial and legislative updates and analyses, register for the free Becker's Hospital Review e-week by ticking here.
